Can you hide your child's gender?

A Toronto couple has decided not to reveal the gender of their baby.

Kathy Witterick and David Stocker are intentionally raising a genderless child in hopes of freeing them from social norms, so that they can choose to be whoever they would like to be.

Storm, born on New Year's Day, has two older brothers — Jazz, 5, and Kio, 2 — whose genders are known, but who have been encouraged by their parents to feel free to make their own choices, gender irrelevant. Both boys wear clothing that is traditional associated with girls — sparkly pants, tutus — and Jazz chose to be home-schooled when he was uncomfortable the traditional school atmosphere (and its reaction to his female clothing).

“What we noticed is that parents make so many choices for their children. It’s obnoxious,” says Stocker. I find this quote a little ironic, because it seems as though these parents have made a pretty critical choice about their child's identity.

I appreciate where the parents' heads are at, but I don't agree with their decision. I think that they are imposing their own political values and social goals on their child in a way that may make life more difficult, unfairly so. Like Diane Ehrensaft, a California-based psychologist, I worry that they will unintentionally marginalize Storm.

Depending on how long Storm's gender is kept a secret, they may be subjected to unfair treatment at school by their peers. While even the most "normal" child can get bullied, intentionally creating a situation in which they are different from other children may be unfair. If the child grows up on wants to reject standard gender identifiers, that's one thing, but to impose that value on a baby seems a bit unreasonable.

As Jezebel rightly points out, Witterick and Stock made the gender of their child more of an issue, not less. If they really wanted their child to be who they really are, why don't they disclose the gender and let them be free to dress however they like, like the older boys? Why this need to keep it a secret?

At the end of the day, it's really not our business and much of the media's reaction to this story is out of fear for the "other," for people who don't identify as male or female. It's trumped up and reactionary.

If the child decides on their own that they want to be gender neutral, then that is fine by me. In the mean time, our society is not nearly as progressive as we like to think it is and that's quite a statement to put on such a young person.

We just had to jump on the bandwagon with this one and highlight the latest Lonely Island jam that has everybody talking (even radio hosts debating its quality compared to say Ke$ha ... but that's just a couple people's opinion). Check out Justin Timberlake (a Saturday Night Live favorite), Andy Samberg and Lady Gaga belt "3-Way (The Golden Rule)," it's okay -- you can laugh.

Tonight's show: Women in Science

Why are there so few women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers? While women account for more than half of university graduates in Canada, they receive only 30% of the degrees granted in science and engineering fields. In elementary, middle and high school, girls and boys take science and math classes in roughly equal numbers and the girls typically have better grades. Yet few women go on to pursue these careers.Tonight we're discussing some of the reasons why women don't choose these careers and the barriers they face in both education and the workforce.

We'll also discuss a couple of awesome female scientists from the history books:
  • Elsie MacGill - a Canadian and the world's first female aircraft designer
  • Marie Curie - a Polish/French physicist and chemist, famous for her research on radioactivity
Elsie MacGill - not only was she the first woman in the world
to be awarded a masters degree in aeronautical engineering,
she was also a women's rights activist! This is one kick-ass lady!

Inexpensive Summer Updates

Looking for tips on how to update a tired space for the summer season? There are many options that are cheap and easy to install in your space that will give it life for the upcoming warm season. Here are some tips on how to lively up your space:

1. Add color: Adding color is always the best way to add life to a space, no matter how it is incorporated. Painting can be tough to do in a leased space, so get creative and make some artwork to decorate your walls. No time for painting? Buy a decorative frame and fill it with greenery or a vintage scarf you find at a local shop or flea market.
2. Bring the outdoors in: Incorporating outdoor elements can bring a breath of fresh air to the indoors. Fresh flowers are always an obvious choice, but they can be pricey for the little amount of time they last. Fake flowers are a great alternative for they give the same amount of liveliness to the space. Love flowers more for fragrance than beauty? Diffusers are a great way to give great fragrance and elegance to a space.
3. Change out your decorative elements: Adding new decorative elements in your space can emphasis the changing of seasons. Summer brings out a lot of bright colors, so reflect them in your decorations. Bright blue or green vases will add interest and mimic the colors outdoors. Changing out your kitchenware is a great way to bring out the feel of summer as well. Fill your cabinets with cheap, bright cups and plates that will make you feel like hosting an outdoor summer party.

Quote of the Day: May 16

“If you have the ability to convince somebody of something that you don’t necessarily think is the case, it’s a valuable asset. Not that I’m, like, a pathological liar, but we spend most of the day not fully being honest, you know?”

Leonardo DiCaprio, actor and environmentalist, on his charisma to Rolling Stone.

Movie Review: Something Borrowed

The first thing that caught my eye when sitting through this movie's opening credits? The film was produced by Hilary Swank, Oscar-winner Hilary Swank. Anyway: I'm not going to lie, I read this movie's literary counterpart (by Emily Giffin) last summer and enjoyed it a little bit — it was nice, light reading. Much like the novel, I can't say that I'm proud of liking this movie for what it is ... but that's how I feel. Surprisingly, Kate Hudson did a lovely job as honest, loud-mouthed, alcoholic, stuck-up Darcy and, unsurprisingly, Ginnifer Goodwin was perfect as pushover Rachel. The true stand-out in this flick, however, was best friend and confidant Ethan, played by John Krasinski (TV's The Office). Something Borrowed deals with some serious relationship issues and doesn't quite develop all of its characters enough to warrant forgiveness for their actions (especially compared to the book), but it is a romantic comedy and it does satisfy its genre to a tee.
Best on-screen moment: Pretty much anytime Ethan attempts to get away from Clare (Ashley Williams) — or tell her a new lie.

Next show: stereotypes about "angry" feminists

Everybody knows the stereotype of the angry, ranting, man-hating, hairy feminist. But if you actually are a feminist, or know anything about feminists, you're aware that the actual percentage of "angry feminists" is extremely low. All feminists are lumped into this category, which is kinda like assuming all Muslims hate America, all Mormons are polygamists or any other wide-sweeping, ridiculously inaccurate generalization.

When a feminist is accused of being angry, it becomes easy for the accuser to dismiss her idea as an overreaction because she's "too emotional." "too sensitive"  or "irrational." (Men's anger, of course, is always rational).  Either that or we're accused of PMSing. Anyway, the angry feminist myth remains an extremely prevalent stereotype, so we're setting out to debunk it on our show!

Here are some references to articles and music we'll be discussing on the show:
Tune in on Monday, May 9 at 8:00 pm on CJSW 90.9 fm in Calgary, or listen online at cjsw.com.

Gender neutral washrooms - not as cool as they sound

Last week I experienced my first gender neutral washroom (excluding queer bars, where male/female washroom signs are basically just suggestions). I was at a club in Vancouver, and when nature called I headed downstairs to the loo, which I quickly discovered was unisex. I’m an open minded person about gender stuff, so I was surprised to realize how uncomfortable the washroom made me feel. After having some time to mull it over, I realized I disliked it for three reasons:

  1. It smelled like pee. I’m totally blaming that on the dudes.

  2. It removed that chit-chat-in-the-washroom ritual that women have. Women are notorious for going to the loo in packs. It’s a nice little escape in a noisy club; you do your makeup, gossip, make new friends and accept hugs from random drunk girls. It just doesn’t feel right in a unisex washroom, because you can’t partake in the ritual in quite the same way.

  3. It didn’t feel safe. The washroom didn’t have stalls so much as “cells” – each stall was its own contained unit. There was no gap under the door or sides, and it was sealed on top; it was a completely closed-off room. It would be really easy for two people to jump in there and get their freak on, which is cool if it’s consensual, but it would also be really easy to force someone in there against their will. With the noise of the club, it would be hard to hear anything.
There are probably much better gender neutral washrooms around, and I hope to experience more in the future because I think they have the potential to be cool in the right situation. But I’m not convinced that they’re appropriate for a night club.

Calgary Shopping List - in case you wondered!

So next weekend I'm taking my mom to see Elton John in concert in Calgary! It's the perfect Mother's Day gift - I get to spend some quality time alone with my mom and we get to bond over an amazing concert and weekend of shopping, eating and drinking!

It's time for some spring and summer shopping so instead of going with no clue in mind.. here is a little list of things I hope to find in Calgary while shopping...

-platform sandals
-adorable flats perfect for any outfit - neutral color
-sundress(es)
-a nice summer purse!
- maybeee a pair of skinny jeans to add to the growing collection!

I probably don't need most of these things. But one thing I definitely plan on looking for are some fun summery tops to spruce up any pants and skirts I already own. I find that I am sick of a lot of the tops in my closet and that is usually the hardest piece to find when putting an outfit together.
If anyone knows of some good local boutiques or places to shop in Calgary please let me know!

VIMwatch: 2011 MET Costume Institute Gala Benefit

Sorry to all the fellas out there but there was just so much good lady-fashion at this last event that we've decided to pick four female "looks of the night" and put our male stars on the back burner this time around (though if you feel like looking into it, we have to say Joshua Jackson and Glee's Matthew Morrison pretty much killed it).

Top Four Looks

Actress Michelle Monaghan absolutely stunned in a hot pink Derek Lam dress. She accessorized with an amazing H. Stern "lizard" cuff and Roger Vivier tube clutch. Our favorite part? Her hair — absolutely fabulous.

Next up, the most surprising of the night, Ms. Liv Tyler left a trail of feathers everywhere she went and turned heads in the process. Tyler's gown hails from Givenchy and is one of the most beautiful and interesting of the evening.

In beautiful, summery fashion Zoe Saldana looked amazing wearing a mellow -yellow Calvin Klein Collection dress. To add to her style, Saldana wore Brian Atwood heels and vintage jewelry from Platt boutique.

Mirroring the recent royal wedding, Sarah Jessica Parker (and Monaghan above) chose a sleeved number with a gorgeous neckline from Alexander McQueen, which she paired with jewelry from Fred Leighton.

Show stopper of the night: Christina Ricci in Zac Posen's webbed creation.
